Extension of Montoir de Bretagne’s terminal 4

Enhanced reception capacity for the port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire

River and Maritime works

France

General description

Extension work on the General Cargo and Container Terminal of Montoir-de-Bretagne consists in constructing a 350-m long reinforced concrete quay, supported by 580 driven steel foundation piles. The extension will prolong terminal 4 to 600 metres. Added to terminals 1, 2 and 3, total length will be around 1,300 metres.

Extension work will enable new container traffic requirements to be met in the long term. Consequently, in 2017, the Great Port of Nantes/Saint-Nazaire will be able to take container ships of 8,000 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), i.e. double the capacity of ships that could berth previously. The port aims to go from 184,000 TEUs in 2012 to 340,000 TEUs by 2020.
