General description

The project located in the Chang Jiang (or Yangtze Kiang)estuary (Yangtze River) is part of the Shanghai-Xi'An motorway. It connects the Pudong area and Changxing Island by means of an 8.9-km-long TBM-driven tunnel, then from there to Chongming Island by a cable-stayed bridge.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

7.5-km-long twin-tube tunnel, 8 cross-passages, and internal structures. The tunnels were excavated by two TBMs without intermediate shafts. The internal tunnel diameter is 13.7 m, and the external diameter 15.0 m.

The two Herrenknecht TBMs were 15.43 m in diameter, 134 m long, and weighed 3,250 tonnes.

The dual three-lane tunnel’s design speed is 80 km/h. Each lane is 3.75 m wide.
