The motorway links Budapest to the south-western area of Hungary, and is part of a major Eastern-European through-route (Turkey-Germany).
The works carried out on the 161-km-long M5 motorway were carried out in 3 phases. They involved building a dual two-lane motorway over a distance of 100 km in Phase 1 (1996–1998), 46 km in Phase 2 (2004–2005), and 15 km in Phase 3 (2005–2006).
